This photo, borrowed from the wikipedia.org article on nomascus concolor, is of a black-crested gibbon. We saw at least five while we were in Laos but were not close enough to take a good photo.

This was a view of the beautiful hills we could see from our treehouse at sunset. Every morning, we would look out and watch the gibbons as they hopped from tree branch to tree branch.

Hanging at Treehouse #1

This is the whole group (12) for our Gibbon Experience trip. Our group comprised people from Australia, Sweden, England, France and the US. This is a view of inside treehouse #1. There are 5 treehouses in total. Bill and I had treehouse #3 to ourselves on the last night.

While walking through the woods, we came across this female cicada guarding her eggs. We were so pleased with the way this photo came out. Finally a picture that captures the beauty of the subject (no smart comments necessary)!

Pulling My Way to Safety

The unfortunate part of the zip lines was not making it all the way across. This was a fairly frequent occurrence which required pulling yourself the rest of the way. Sound easy? Physically, maybe. Mentally? Not so much. Hanging hundreds of feet in the air attached by a couple of cables and swinging in the wind can be nerve wracking.

Imagine our surprise when this not-so-little fellow started running along the tree where treehouse #1 is in Bokeo Reserve. They have exceptionally long tails. Our Aussie friends were delighted to see a squirrel - something Australians don't regularly see.

Hanging with New Friends in the Laotian Jungle

We couldn't believe it when we arrived to the Bokeo Reserve and found this Laotian girl holding an asiatic black bear. The one month old baby had been saved by a park ranger that rescued it from poachers that had presumably killed her mother. Not sure how they ended up with 2 macaques either, but this other guy was just one half of the monkey fun.

I didn't know Bill had such problems! Actually, this guy is officially a macaque and liked to jump around on backs, heads and anywhere and everywhere. He always wanted to be the center of attention and was not happy that the cute little bear was getting so much attention.
