Tenzig Norgay Monument

This monument, dedicated to Sherpa Tenzig Norgay, resides across from his grave marker at his Himalayen Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, India. Norgay, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, was the first person to ascend to the summit of Mt. Everest. His institute boasts having more than 2 dozen hikers summit the world's highest mountain.

This was our room at the cozy, Dekeling Eagle's Nest in Darjeeling. The owner, a friendly Tibetan woman, went out of her way to make us feel at home. The food was tasty Tibetan home cooking and we loved having two fireplaces!

Tibetan Rug Makers at Refugee Self-Help Centre in Darjeeling

These women make traditional Tibetan rugs using looms and creating patterns simply from memory. Their rugs were fantastic and I once again had Bill worried that I was going to start commissioning a rug.

The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre is located on the outskirts of Darjeeling and houses many Tibetans that fled from China's harsh conditions. Young and old men and women make yarn, sew leather clothing, make jackets and rugs and a whole host of other handicrafts.

Tea Pickers in Darjeeling

Tea pickers at the Happy Valley Tea Estate in Darjeeling. Most pickers are women and they work for 8 hours a day and make ~$20 a month. The best tea is picked using the top two leaves and the bud.
